The Fourth Amendment and Your Smart Home
Can the Police Access Your Smart Home Devices?
Do not give the police blanket consent to search your home or access your devices. Instead, ask if they have a warrant or if you can call your lawyer.
Be polite and cooperative, but firm in your refusal to grant access without a warrant or proper consent.
Remember that you have the right to remain silent – don’t feel pressured to answer questions or provide information beyond your identification.
“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated…” – The Fourth Amendment to the US Constitution
